Editorial Methodology

How we choose what to recommend, and what our recommendations do and do not mean.

Written and maintained by Stef Zeps, Publisher & Editor of The Gear Post. Questions or corrections: contact page.

Most of our picks are researched, not personally tested

The Gear Post is a small, independently operated publication. The majority of the products we write about have not been worn, ridden in or bench-tested by us. Those recommendations are research-led: they are built from published manufacturer specifications, certification levels, verified owner feedback, independent expert reviews and creator video reviews we link to directly, and the prices we have recorded across the retailers we track.

Where we have physically used an item, the page carries a hands-on label with a note on how long we used it and in what conditions. If a page does not carry that label, treat it as a researched recommendation. We never describe research as testing, and we never invent testing experience.

How products are selected and compared

  1. Start from the category requirements. Certification, fit and sizing, waterproofing, battery life, mounting compatibility and warranty — whatever actually decides the purchase in that category.
  2. Filter out anything that fails them, regardless of price or the commission it would pay.
  3. Compare the survivors like for like on published specifications, availability at North American retailers, and recorded prices over time.
  4. Write the trade-offs plainly. Where a cheaper option genuinely wins, it wins. Where the honest answer is “wait”, we say wait.

We do not publish an overall numeric score for products, and no star rating or “x out of 5” figure appears anywhere on the site. A single number implies a repeatable measurement we have not made, so we describe strengths, weaknesses and who a product suits instead. Rankings inside a guide come only from published specifications and certifications, recorded price history, retailer availability, and the independent reviews and owner feedback we link to on the page.

Affiliate relationships do not decide our conclusions

Some links on this site earn us a commission when you buy. Commission rates, program membership and merchant relationships play no part in whether a product is included, how it is ranked, or what the write-up says. No brand or retailer can pay to appear, to be placed higher, or to have criticism removed. We regularly link to retailers that pay us nothing when they are the better option for the reader.

Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Our recommendations are editorially independent.

Prices and availability change

Prices shown on this site are the most recent figures we recorded at the retailers we track, with the date we recorded them displayed alongside. They are not a live feed. Stock levels, regional availability, shipping costs, taxes, duties and promotions change without notice, and a listing can be discontinued at any time. Always confirm the current price and availability on the retailer's own page before buying.

Corrections

If we have something wrong, tell us through the contact page. Corrections are prioritised over new work.
